The Domestic Helper Training Handbook, Book Three of The Shared Standard

Who this book is written for

This one is different from the other two. It is addressed to the helper herself, not to the employer, and it is hers to keep.

You buy it and print it for her. She uses it. She writes your household's specifics into it, and it becomes the reference she can consult at nine on a Tuesday evening without having to ask.

That distinction is the point. A document she owns gets used. A list handed to her gets read once.

Most of what is called training is not instruction. She knows how to clean a bathroom. What is missing is which of the four reasonable ways is the one your household uses, and a reference she can check without interrupting anyone. This book supplies the professional baseline. Your household's specifics go in the spaces provided, agreed between the two of you.

What is inside

The contents, as they appear in the book.

  • 1. Before you start: safety first. The ten safety rules, windows and balconies and working at height, and what to do in an emergency.
  • 2. Working as a professional. The role, and why better method means lower cost and less harm.
  • 3. The science of clean and home health. The chemistry of clean, the difference between cleaning and sanitising and disinfecting, and indoor air, humidity and allergies.
  • 4. Tools, products and cleaning solutions. Colour coding, labels, the kit, what may be reused and what must never be, and how to mix solutions safely.
  • 5. Professional cleaning techniques. Cloth management, top to bottom and clean to dirty, microfibre, and dry against wet cleaning.
  • 6. Laundry and fabric care. Fabric handling, machine settings, stains, and drying in humidity.
  • 7. Schedules, routines and time management.
  • 8. Special situations and troubleshooting.
  • 9. Continuing learning, responsibility and trusted sources.
  • Appendices A to F. Daily, weekly and monthly schedules, a quick reference, the alignments for the first two weeks, and handover notes. Plus a glossary.

What to teach in her first week, and what can wait

A note on the language

All three books say helper. Singapore's Ministry of Manpower calls her a Migrant Domestic Worker, and each book explains that once near the front before simplifying to the word everyone actually uses. This one is still hers, and the whole of it is an argument that the work is skilled.

The difference is deliberate. This book is written to her, about work she does skilfully, and the word it uses reflects that.
